Deuteronomy 7:18

Bible Verse

“Thou shalt not be afraid of them: but shalt well remember what the LORD thy God did unto Pharaoh, and unto all Egypt” – Deuteronomy 7:18.

Reflection

In Deuteronomy 7:18, we find ourselves amidst the heartfelt guidance Moses offers the Israelites as they stand on the precipice of the Promised Land. At first glance, this verse might appear to pertain solely to a distant historical context, offering instructions for an ancient people facing tangible enemies and monumental challenges. However, upon deeper reflection, we see that the verse holds timeless wisdom that speaks powerfully into our lives today.

The call to “not be afraid” is a universal echo through the ages. Fear is an emotion that knows no bounds, affecting people of all times and contexts. Fear often paralyzes us, breeds doubt, and deters us from living fully into the life God envisions for us. Yet, the directive to remember what the LORD did to Pharaoh and Egypt serves as a compelling reminder of God’s power and faithfulness. It invokes a recognition of past deliverances—the miraculous acts God performed to lead His chosen people out of bondage and toward freedom.

For us today, recalling God’s past faithfulness can fortify our spirits. Perhaps we have not witnessed plagues or parted seas in our lifetime, but we have surely experienced God’s presence and provision in personal ways. The verse invites us to draw our strength from these memories, recognizing that God’s love and power transcend time. What battles have we survived? What miracles have touched our mundane lives? Acknowledging the divine intervention we’ve experienced can embolden our steps forward into the unknown, just as it did for the Israelites.

This verse also beckons us toward perseverance. Challenges may loom large, often appearing insurmountable, much like the powerful nations surrounding Israel. Yet, Moses calls for resolve. With God on their side, the Israelites are encouraged to push past fear and step out in faith. In our journey of personal growth and faith, this perseverance becomes a pillar. As we face our own “Egypts” and “Pharaohs”—be it adversity in relationships, career hurdles, or internal struggles—leaning into God’s past faithfulness gives us a hopeful lens through which to view our current situation.

Lastly, this verse encourages trust—not blind optimism, but a trust rooted in God’s unchangeable nature. By steadfastly remembering God’s faithfulness, we’re reminded that He is consistent and unyielding in His commitment to us, as we are invited to be in our faith journeys. This trust fosters a relationship built on love and grace, where fear has little room to reside.

Closing Thought

Let the memories of God’s faithfulness energize you today. As you courageously face life’s challenges, remember that the same power that sustained Moses and the Israelites resides with you. Trust in that divine presence, and let it guide you beyond fear, into hope-filled promise and unshakeable peace.
